I wasn't really too excited for BBC's Doctor Who spin-off Class. But I still had hope. I was sceptical, but was hopeful that I would be surprised by a memorable and inventive show which captures the same essence and feel of Doctor Who. How wrong I was! The first two episodes of the spin-off have just been released, and I hadn't really intended to do a review on them. But my sheer shock at how bad I found this show demands me to put my thoughts out there. Putting it simply, Class is poor. Very poor. Even though my hopes weren't high, I expected more than what I was given. These are my first impressions of the show. I feel like Class took everything of what makes Doctor Who good and completely reversed it. The characters are instantly forgettable; cardboard cut-outs with predictable and boring traits, adding to their absurdly-high unlikeability. Most of the performances are completely bland. I can not tell you what each characters' name was, because there is no attempt to make any character slightly interesting (perhaps with the exception of the footballer character. Yes, I know I don't know his name. But trust me, neither will you.) The first episode's pacing is atrocious. Weird angles and messy editing plague this episode, and the show's half-assed attempt at shock-horror is, frankly, embarrassing. The show tries way too hard to be gory, and it often comes off as awkward, and even laughable. The writing is probably the worst element of this show, though. It's as if the show is trying to shove the words, "WE'RE CONTEMPORARY!", down your throat. Things happen and lines are said that make little to no sense. It's all just one big mess. And that's how I'd describe this show. One big mess. There are a few saving graces. The soundtrack is pretty good. Nothing great, but definitely one of the better elements of the show. Plus, the appearance of the Doctor in the first episode is more than welcome. I particularly found his comment about chain store IKEA in one scene hilarious. Still, though, if you polish a turd, it's still a turd. I know we're only two episodes in, and the show could improve over time. But as of right now, Class is a boring, awkward, poorly-written, and poorly-acted piece of pretentious television that doesn't seem to know what it's doing, tripping over predictable and anti-climactic plot points and unnecessary gore. It's far from the worst show I've ever seen, and it has its good areas, but my hopes are low for the future of Class. 4/10 |
